Updates on Life.
Those Trojan and Cold War papers were an A+ and an A respectively which was kind of nice. My end of year plans have been fucked as the Greek History Trip was cancelled due to a lack of numbers (possibly due to the price...). They need around 23 people enrolled to go ahead as innevitably up to a quarter might drop out and the trip requires at leat 18 people (20 being the ideal number). They got 14. What this means is not all bad however, the obvious being I have another full year to save up for it, and rather than being contrained by the 8 weeks between the trip and the first term it will now be open ended. Rather than the start of an honours course it will be the end of an honours course. This + the extra money saved = a trip as long as I can afford. The only constraint is still that bonded merit scholarship possibly, in any case I doubt I will be spending more than a year away anyway. So I will definately add Germany onto the visiting list. The time allocated (apart from Greece/Turkey) of a couple of weeks each is sort of on the assumption that these countries couldn't be anymore expensive than Japan (I'm sure this naiivity will kick me in the arse). ... In cosplay news I've made a few bits and bobs thusfar but the procrastination virus is still around. The cosworx wig order went off without a hitch which is rather nice. Well almost, the wigs I ordered myself as upleasantly small and don't properly fit. I'm not sure if proper pinning can remedy this. I've paid more attention to my 2nd brother as we've assembled/had made by Mother and I a very nice looking Dark Link cosplay. Minus the sword and shield anyway. He'd need to rent a chainmail vest as well. He wants to grey up his face, though mum won't let me get him red contacts. I will want to kidnap at some stage one of you people experienced with wigs considering that the last of was held on by a giant red hat. My exceptionally long hair is also a difficulty. Cosworx batch order (Wigs/Boots)
A repost from the Cosplay NZ forums. Basically I have three people plus myself thusfar. OK, anyone in Wellington needing to buy a wig? I have two people that wish to plus I'll probably get something myself. Now is probably the latest you can leave it before Armageddon. It's only two months away and shipping can be SLOW. A BATCH ORDER OF WIGS IS IMPERATIVE due to the current economic climate as it saves money on shipping. Any wig you see on cosworx, multiply the price by 3x! That's how much it costs to buy one wig on its own. The NZ to US rate is at .51c, and that means double the price. Double on the wig, double on the shipping. However in having multiple wigs in one order that cuts down the price considerably by eliminating the shipping price for most of the wigs. Among six people you go from an individual shipping price of $19 ($38NZ) to about $9NZ. Example: One 'Scruffy' wig = ($35 + $19 shipping) = $108 NZ Six seperate orders would then = $648 Six Scruffy wigs in one order = ($210 + $27 shipping) = $472 But wait, there's more! After cosworx had a bad case of retardation last time I ordered from them I received a $20 gift certificate. That's $20 US. In other words, it would cover much of the shipping. Who needs to buy a wig? Duplicate post here: http://cosplaynewzealand.forumotion.com/wellygeddon-f9/cosworx-batch-order-t2787.htm#107824Oh yeah, cosworx is also good for boots (Poke the Chris ?) | | Thursday, February 12th, 2009 | | 11:56 am |
If I wanted to start a quack-science scare...
I would go with Vitamin C. do you know how much of this we actually consume? Recently I've discovered the wonderous taste that is Pink Grapefruit and Pink Grapefruit juice (Buy the McCoy, not the Ocean Spray. The Ocean spray stuff is crap and sugary and more expensive anyway. But also don't buy anything else from McCoy, only the Pink Grapefruit juice is good. The Dark Grape juice is especially bad, the pineapple juice tastes like melted pineapple fruju's, and the other flavours as kinda 'meh' in general. The grapefruits themselves are $5 a kilo and on average weigh about 310g each. The skin is highly unpleasant so you should actually slice and peel rather than just slice the buggers unless you want your mouth kinda numbed. Also, they react with spicy food. Spicy Italian sausages plus grapefruit don't mix well) and on the side of the back it actually boasts that 'One serving (250ml) contains twice the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.' Wait, what? Twice the RECOMMENDED? Eh? One measly glass of the good stuff and you're already OD'ing on Vitamin C. Isn't that defeating the purpose of a serving size? Should the serving size be 125mls then? Take it in a shot glass in one hit. Anyway, just think about it. Say you had a glass of that at breakfast. If you eat a blimmin orange later in the day you're just overdosing further. Take a Berrocca? You fucking junkie. I'm looking at this 600ml bottle of 'Supplement Water Pineapple and Passionfruit' (just cycling through these drinks, they're okay and expensive as hell) and it also contains '100% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Yeh-haw. It's mid day and I think I'm at about 400% RDI so far. Lots of other things contain vitamin C as well in various quanities. What does this mean? Every day you're taking way too much vitamin C. This is surely the cause of all medical maldies of modern society like cancer (everything causes cancer, so no argument there), obesity, ADD, procrastination, pirate decline, and so on. Life Planning.
As it goes, it would seem I have until February 13th (end of the summer term) to organise not only these coming terms but 2010 as well. This is due to wanting to take the Greek Field Trip this year as the start of my honours rather than at the end of next year as the end of honours as many people usually would. My life is looking something like this assuming I can get the Classics and History departments to talk to each other, and assuming all goes JUST AS PLANNED 2008-2009 SummerCLAS313: Troy and the Trojan War (40% at A+ thusfar) HIST321: International History: Cold War 1945-1991 (35% at A- thusfar) 2009 Term One:CLAS304: Greek Mythology HIST323: Colonialism and Post-Colonialism ARTH310: Topics in Colonial Art 2009 Term Two:HIST318: Mobilising the Masses (Propaganda paper) ARTH315: Topics in 18th Century Art Summer:CLAS420: Greek Field Trip (Nov-Dec) followed by Jan-February in Europe. I want to see at least some of Italy, France, England as well. Mostly Historical tourism I think. 2010:Hist4?? HIST489: Research Essay CLAS404: History and Historiography (Roman Empire) - The Colonialism and Post-Colonialism paper in history might fit well with the two art history papers, but I really would have rather done the HIST327 Magic and Witchcraft paper - BUT it isn't being offered this year. It could however show up in 2010, in which then I might take it as my ?? history honours paper. Otherwise I will have to choose something else. It doesn't help of course that I'm thinking about honours in 2010 considering that the faculties will have no idea what papers they will be offering in 2010. - Another issue is that I may need to pick up Greek or Latin in order to pursue Classics at honours, I would certainly have to should I wish to continue to an MA. My hoby language of Japanese has fallen completely by the way side in my university life, being left cold and lonely in a box on the street corner at the end of 7th form. Maybe I can take it up during my Honours year if I don't have to do Greek/even if I do. - If doing three 300 level papers in the first term is easy enough I could slot in PHIL309 into the second term, that way I would only be two papers (one 300 level, one at any level) away from majoring in Philosophy as well. Another option would be to chuck in those two PHIL papers in 2010 and finish it as a major as well. - All in all this is quite simly HUEG sacks of money. I initially wanted to dump the Bonded Merit scholarship after two years considering its 'stay in the country' clause. Basically once you stop taking the money you have to stay in the country for that number of years. If you take it for 2 years, its stay in NZ for 2 out of the following 3 years, and so on. But considering that honours papers cost $1300 each ATM and that's only going to by up by 2010 I might need it to stave off the Student Loan Monster for another year. I'll try to pick up some more scholarships. While there is nothing for BA students really, there are more scholarships potentially avaliable in third year and postgraduate. Wellington
As anyone in this city who has traversed the streets knows, all through 2008 extensive roadworks and renovations were underway, namely: - The widening of footpaths down Lambton Quay in some maddened attempt to create a 'boulevard' type deal. - The addition of glass and steel frontages or display windows for many of the retail spaces for about 100m either side of burger king on Lambton Quay - The construction of 'Chews Lane', a sort of bricky-boutiquey up market space opposite Willis street - The redevelopment of central Courtenay Place Now these have all been successful in city beautification, no doubt about that. Apart from creating amazing bottlenecks in Lambton and Courtenay with the shrunken roadways, it otherwise just looks nicer. The problem? Well, everything was finished right on time for an economic recession. Combine this with the abnormally high rents that have been killing off places as ancient as United Video and Christopher's Crystals, and well, it's time for a reality check. I really do not rate the chances of Chew's Lane surviving as it is (I think one cafe has already died). Who's going to be buying flamboyantly expensive clothing when they're bitching about the cost of milk? Wellington has undergone somewhat of a boutiquification in the last few years (I snort at your $250 jeans), it probably isn't sustainable. If you walk down Lambton Quay you'll find most stores proclaiming sales of up to 50-80% off, as well as several vacant lots. The cursed shopping location of Wellington (that one just past national bank where you turn into Willis street, on the right hand side of the alley way) is yet again empty. Turn the corner down Willis Street and you can walk past 5-6 vacant lots all in a row right opposite the newly constructed Chews Lane. The obviously next target for repaving with brickwork and doing up the store fronts would be Willis Street because it looks like Hobotown compared to the other main drags now, and that's exactly what they are planning. The vacant lots are vacant because they're taking down that whole section to build up something new. But I wonder whether this will actually occur. The ability to build new shiny buildings becomes somewhat difficult in times like these. Worst case scenario, we have a very pretty very empty 'Golden Mile' until rents go down and economic fortunes get better. Maids and things
Cosplay costumes in Japan range from about the equivelent of $100+ (usually for just a jacket), the majority averaging $200. You can get any style of maid uniform you want. Also, adult shops tend to have even larger varities of cosplay costumes than the cosplay places themselves. Personally I'm thinking of grabbing a federation uniform, but other than that I haven't see anything I specifically want. The main problem is that the overwhelming majority is female stuff. Some places have school uniforms in all the colours of the school uniform rainbow. Harajuku has a lot of interesting maid/goth/lolita clothing especially. Harajuku is divided up four ways between MTV, punk, fluffyness, and gothic/maid, whereas Akihabara has the cosplay. (Poke the Chris ?) | | Wednesday, September 10th, 2008 | | 10:22 pm |

$$$
That Bonded Merit scholarship rather belated turned out to have happened, so that's +$3000 for each year I take it for. That brings my savings for Greece in 2009 up by that respective amount. Effectively I'm at something like $5500/8000. (I have $2000/2000 for Japan in October). (4 Prodding Fingers // Poke the Chris ?) | | Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 | | 12:22 am |
Armageddon
Armageddon is so dull it's hardly an excuse for the cosplaying. Firstly, before it even starts there's the anuual ritual of the most interesting guest/s you wanted to see canceling. It's been the same shops almost exactly for about three years now, Toyworld, the Gamesman, Pulsar Max, the poster guy, Heroes4sale, the place with the flickering light up mouthguards, etc. It's even losing stores - no apperance by the Medieval Shop this year. Though this is perhaps understandable in that they are so poorly organised their homepage has been down or ununpdated for about 4 years now. There is little to no point in gathering together shops that you could have otherwise visited. The little point there is in doing so is if they are having cut price sales, which admittedly, some were. But more importantly, there was nothing there that actually interested me. This isn't helped by the hopeless venue that is the Events Center TSB Arena. Unfortunately there is pretty much nowhere else to hold the damn thing. The Michael Fowler center had an enormous and proper stage, and had multiple screening rooms, but no shop space. The TSB on the other hand has some shop space, but craptastic screening rooms and stages. Even though it's bigger in that regard to the Michael Fowler, it hasn't got enough space to add new shops, and it utilises what it does have terribly. The nature of Armageddon must surely lead to enormous numbers of shop thefts. The entire second floor of seating is hardly used, and sometimes even locked off. They tried once to screen things onto projectors in front of the seats up there but it failed dismally due to the second problem of the ambient noise. A black curtain never was and still isn't good enough to seperate the areas. You can still hear everything. At least the wrastlin' is in the building next store these days. Which is another rant, Armageddon tries to draw a larger audience with things like Wrestling, dirt bikes, etc, and subsequently mixes two crowds that actually don't have as much overlap as they might hope. Quite frankly I'm sick of the little bastards that do their best to pick fights, break props, and steal things. There is also no decent food or drink. If someone set up outside with easily accessable and normally priced things they would probably stand to make a lot of money. Overall Armageddon is loud, smelly, with bright lights and bad, hot, air. It gives me an enormous headache whenever I go. I expect this time next year I could copy paste this entire post. I wonder what the new cosplay contest prize sponser wants with our information, surely can't be anything useful. While the loss of the top 10 (by their mandate in favourite of more specific categories) could be have been irritating, the judges effectively went with a top 5 via the 'honourable mentions' instead. When the more specific awards are added the overall number of prizes has increased as well as increased in value. I don't remember a People's choice or original character award on the day however... I wish there was somewhere for cosplayers to change. (7 Prodding Fingers // Poke the Chris ?) | | Friday, March 28th, 2008 | | 10:06 pm |

More Nephrite stuff
Despite Amazon.com predicting an arrival date of between the 13th-28th my boots arrived today. They're pretty good, but about 200% more whorish than I had expected. Then again, Sailor Moon's creator is thoroughly guilty of MAN-GIRL SYNDROME so it doesn't matter. (4 Prodding Fingers // Poke the Chris ?) | | Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 | | 10:27 pm |
Nephrite Cosplay
Yay for getting a prize at the cosplay picnic :P However the costume is somewhere in the realm of 80% complete. Thanks to the low budget animation his costume is ALWAYS BLOODY DIFFERENT IN EVERY SHOT. Bits of the trimming (arm/collars/cuffs) mysteriously disapear and reappear. The manga art can't even DECIDE WHAT COLOUR ANYTHING IS (notice eyes, uniform, trim...). I plan to do the extra trim around the arm seam since that's the only part I haven't done.
